Weekend sport: AFC hit six in Trophy

AFC Sudbury romped to a 6-1 victory over fellow league side Great Wakering Rovers at King’s Marsh on Saturday to comfortably book their place in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

A brace from Nathan Clarke and goals from James Baker, Ryan Henshaw, Robbie Martin and Dave Wareham gave them their biggest win of the season in front of a crowd of 198.

There was also a 6-1 win for Long Melford in the Suffolk Senior Cup first round at the Delphi sports ground, while Cornard United book their place in the next round of the competition with a 3-2 win at Capel Plough.

In the Ridgeons League Premier Division, Hadleigh United beat Diss Town 2-0 with Ben Deacon and C Smith on target for the Brettsiders.

In the rugby, Sudbury slipped to their second successive defeat, 23-10 at home to title-chasing Holt, who maintained their 100 per cent record.

AFC Sudbury are in action in the Suffolk Premier Cup at Felixstowe & Walton United on Tuesday (7.45pm) before they travel to Conference South side Eastbourne Borough in the FA Cup on Saturday (3pm).
