Weekend round-up: Sudbury RUFC lift Suffolk Cup

Sudbury’s 38-27 victory over Ipswich YM saw the club land its first Suffolk Cup since 1999 in front of a large crowd at Whittome Field.

Frazer Beckett, who played in the second half of Saturday’s victory, suffered a serious knee injury early in Eastern Counties’ 42-5 quarter-final defeat at the hands of Northumberland in the RFU National Under-20s Championship at Sudbury on Sunday.

AFC Sudbury kept their faint Ryman League North promotion play-off hopes alive with a 2-2 draw at Cheshunt on Saturday.

Ben Thompson gave AFC a first half lead, but it needed an injury-time goal from Jack Wilkinson to salvage a point.

In the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division leaders Hadleigh United stumbled again, going down 3-1 at Kirkley and Pakefield.

Halstead Town lost the battle between the top two in the First Division, losing 2-1 at home leaders Whitton United.

In the same division AFC Sudbury Reserves were beaten 6-1 at home by Swaffham Town, Long Melford lost 2-1 at Saffron Walden Town, and Cornard United were beaten 3-0 at Haverhill Borough.

In the Barclays Premier League, Norwich City slipped to 15th after a 3-0 defeat at Swansea City.

Ipswich Town came from behind with a Daryl Murphy goal earning a 1-1 draw with fellow play-off chasers Nottingham Forest at Portman Road in the Sky Bet Championship.
