Weekend round-up: DISS RFC go down to heavy home defeat against rivals Bury St Edmunds

A DEPLETED Diss side lost 35-8 to Bury St Edmunds in front of a bumper crowd at Mackedners on Saturday, having gone into the break at 8-8, while the town’s football side were defeated 1-0 at Kirkley and Pakefield.

Phil Sharpe’s rugby side were unable to repeate their first half performance in the second period as Bury upped their game to run in a 27-point winning margin over their neighbours.

The only home try came from fullback Chris Beaird with Bury’s five trys earning them a bonus-point win, although they cannot catch Diss in fourth with one fixture left to play.

In the Ridgeons League Premier Division Diss Town suffered only their second defeat in 11 matches to leave Rob Taylor’s side 13th.

Debenham LC suffered a 5-0 defeat at Maitlands (in front of a crowd of 95) to title chasers Godmanchester Rovers in the First Division.

In the Premier League Norwich City went down to a 6-1 home defeat to title-chasing Manchester City as Carlos Tevez scored a hat-trick, Sergio Aguero hit a brace and Adam Johnson added the sixth. Andrew Surman had scored a 51st minute goal to take the score to 2-1.

Ipswich Town drew 1-1 at Crystal Palace with Jason Scotland’s stunning long range strike bringing them level in the second half after Norwich loannee Chris Martin had given the Eagles the lead.
