Strong Hadleigh defence secures three points

Hadleigh United 3

IT WAS a backs-to-the-wall exercise for Hadleigh before three points were safely pocketed at the Millfield on Monday against a talented young side from Cambridge Regional College.

Hadleigh scored after eight minutes when Ben Deacon’s shot was blocked and Josh Mayhew fired in the loose ball from a narrow angle on the right.

After that, the visitors were on top with Hadleigh keeper Arron Benstead making four fine saves before Hadleigh’s second goal against the run of play after 41 minutes.

The goal came when Mayhew intercepted a poor back pass for an easy goal to give Hadleigh a flattering two--goal advantage at the interval.

Two minutes into the second period, it was 3-0. A cross from the right by Deacon was perfect for Duane Wright to head home from close range.

CRC continued to put on pressure with Luke Berry converting a penalty kick after 55 minutes following a foul by Simon Hyde.

The game came to life after 74 minutes as Liam Hughes broke clear to shoot a well-taken goal for the Cambridge youngsters.

They attacked in search of an equaliser that would have been a deserved reward, but strong defending enabled Hadleigh to hang on, despite injuries to Mayhew and Wright.

n Brett Girling returned after injury in place of Jack Wilkinson who has gone back to Needham Market after a three month loan spell at the Millfield.
