Jockeys too good for Long Melford

Long Melford 0

Newmarket Town 4

Rocked by injuries, unavailabilities and departures, Melford manager Robbie Benson had only three first-team regulars available for this heavy defeat to high-flying Newmarket Town.

The visitors opened the scoring after nine minutes when Aaron Turner tapped in at the far post before Melford’s impressive new keeper Danny Lynn made a fine double save to thwart Stephen Bugg.

Melford had an excellent 10 or 15-minute spell and should have equalised, Jack Hubbard and Charlie Holmes combining well, but Carl Daw’s shot cleared the bar.

Courtney Prince and young debutant James Wyatt also went close, but Tony Wright and Dave Grainger made it 3-0 by the break before Tony Brown added a fourth just after the interval.

In the closing stages, Ben Simpson released under-18 player James Irwin and his shot was saved by Newmarket keeper Matt Paynter.
