Hadleigh United came from behind to clinch victory at Oxhey Jets in the FA Vase second round on Saturday.

This was Hadleigh’s first appearance in this competition after being exempt from the early rounds due to reaching last season’s quarter-final.

Will Baker made a smart save from Duane Wright after 15 minutes before Hadleigh survived a goalmouth scramble, the ball going behind for a corner.

Keeper Fred Howe safely held a free kick, but the Hadleigh number one was beaten after 31 minutes when a free kick from the left touchline was headed home by Sim Armstrong to put Oxhey ahead.

Six minutes later, Hadleigh levelled when Wright fired against the post, Scott
Chaplin gaining possession to cross for Wright to have better luck with his second

Wright volleyed over from close range before another left wing cross from Chaplin was volleyed into the roof of the net by Josh Mayhew to give Hadleigh an interval lead, although Adam Lowton went close for Oxhey after 42 minutes.

Seven minutes into the second half, Michael Barwick set up number three for Chaplin, but Oxhey were providing formidable opposition.

After 65 minutes, a cross from the right was converted by Lowton, who reacted quickest in a crowded goalmouth for the final goal.

Hadleigh held on comfortably, with Chaplin going close to increasing their lead.

nHadleigh are home to Welwyn or Ely City, who were due to replay last night, in the third round proper on December 7.

nHadleigh Reserves lost 2-1 at Newmarket, with the Jockeys’ winner coming from the spot after Sam Sharp had equalised.
