A SPLENDID contest ended all square after both teams had scored in the first half on Saturday in Hadleigh’s trip into the heart of the Fens.

Stuart Crawford’s side went ahead after 14 minutes when Ben Deacon centred from the right and Lee McGlone volleyed home at the second attempt after keeper Lee Pacey had blocked the first effort from McGlone.

Twenty minutes later, a fine Ely move opened up Hadleigh’s defence and Josh Bridgeman fired in the equaliser.

Then another Deacon cross was headed just wide by McGlone on his debut.

Ely missed a chance straight from the restart of the second half. Then a volley from Austen Diaper was saved by Daniel Heath before McGlone headed just past the far post for Hadleigh on the hour.

The Robins had a good spell with Heath twice making excellent saves as Ely went all out to maintain their impressive start to the season with only two defeats in the league before this game.

But they lived dangerously as Deacon got clean through in the last minute, but Pacey used his legs to block the shot.

Then McGlone also got clear but was foiled by a last-ditch tackle in stoppage time.

l Hadleigh Reserves won 6-2 against Clacton Reserves at the Millfield after being three goals ahead at the interval.

Luke Waugh and Kieran Dilloway got two apiece while Deasko Garner and Jamie Cowan also scored in a great team performance.
