Hadleigh United 1

Saffron Walden Town 2

Hadleigh dominated for long spells but outstanding defending by Saffron Walden, especially by former Long Melford keeper, Floyd Croll, meant the points went to Essex.

Croll made fine saves from David Lorimer twice before Craig Calver, unmarked in acres of space on the left, opened the scoring on 21 minutes for the visitors.

The Walden keeper conceded corners to keep out efforts from Danny Thrower and Marley Spindler before the interval of a lively contest.

After 51 minutes, Hadleigh lost possession following their own throw-in and James Thomas raced clear to increase Walden’s lead.

Ben Nower saved brilliantly to prevent further disaster.

Hadleigh reduced the deficit on 61 minutes when Lorimer set up Joe Chester, who crossed from the right and Scott Chaplin scored easily.

The Brettsiders piled on the pressure, but Croll was in unbeatable form, which included a double save from Thrower and George Mrozec when an equaliser looked certain in the 75th minute.

n In the First Division, Cornard United bounced back from a 7-0 League Cup defeat by Godmanchester Rovers on Tuesday, to win 3-0 at Needham Market Reserves on Friday.

Rene Swann scored a hat-trick at Bloomfields to lift the Ards up to 15th.
