Newmarket Town 1
Hadleigh United 3
HADLEIGH United were on the back foot for long spells of the second half at New Cheveley Road on Saturday. It was only a stoppage time third goal by Lee McGlone which gave the score a convincing look.
Stuart Crawford’s side went ahead after 14 minutes when a long throw into the goalmouth by Jack Cawley was bundled into the net with McGlone getting the final touch ahead of Ben Deacon.
At the other end, keeper Daniel Heath made three vital blocks as Newmarket began to get into the game.
Kris Rose and Cawley went near for Hadleigh before the interval but Crawford’s side went further ahead after 61 minutes when Deacon lobbed home from 40 yards with keeper Kevin Bugg off his line.
Seven minutes later Newmarket scored as George Darling crossed from the left and Jason Lynch headed past Heath.
From then on Hadleigh were forced to defend with Heath saving at the expense of a corner after 71 minutes as the Jockeys pushed for an equaliser.
Hadleigh’s rearguard held firm, despite several anxious moments, before McGlone broke clear down the right and scored with a powerful cross shot seconds later before the final whistle.
