Football weekend round-up and mid-week fixtures

Josh Mayhew enjoyed a dream debut to help Bury Town halt a winless run, while there were also victories for Long Melford and Hadleigh United.

Having only signed for the Blues on Friday night following his release from Brightlingsea Regent, Mayhew made an immediate impact bagging a debut hat-trick to inspire Ben Chenery’s side to a first victory in six.

Further goals came from Ollie Canfer and Camel Ramadan to leave Bury ninth in Ryman League Division One North.

Elsewhere, Soham Town Rangers were forced to settle for a share of the spoils following a 1-1 draw with Cheshunt, while AFC Sudbury saw their match away at Maldon and Tiptree postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

In the Premier Division, Needham Market’s poor form continued as they slipped to a fourth straight defeat going down to a 2-1 defeat at Bognor Regis Town.

Michael Brothers had levelled after Luke Kandi’s early opener but the same player struck again with just five minutes remaining to down Mark Morsely’s men and leave them 20th in the table.

In the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division, Haverhill Rovers lost to Mildenhall Town 1-0, Long Melford eased past Walsham-le-Willows 3-0 and Hadleigh United cruised past Brantham Athletic by the same scoreline.

Meanwhile, Newmarket Town suffered a 3-0 defeat against Stanway Rovers.

In the First Division, AFC Sudbury Reserves eased past Woodbridge Town with a 3-0 victory, while Debenham LC and Diss Town were held to 1-1 draws by Haverhill Borough and Kings Lynn Town Reserves respectively.

Elsewhere, Cornard United went down to a 5-1 defeat at Great Yarmouth Town while Halstead Town sealed their place in the First Division Knockout Cup semi-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Downham Town.

Meanwhile in the FA Cup Third Round, Ipswich Town were held by Sky Bet League Two outfit Portsmouth in a 2-2 draw.

Tommy Oar broke the deadlock for Town after 53 minutes only for Portsmouth to level through Kyle Bennett two minutes later.

The underdogs then took the lead with four minutes remaining through Connor Chaplin but Ipswich managed to avoid an upset as Ryan Fraser struck two minutes from time to force a replay.

Elsewhere, rivals Norwich City were knocked out of the cup following a 3-0 defeat to Premier League rivals Manchester City at Carrow Road.

A brilliant individual strike from Sergio Aguero was added to by Kelechi Iheanacho and Kevin de Bruyne to complete the scoring.
