Football roundup: Diss take heed of manager’s words with nine-goal spree
Diss Town’s forwards took heed of manager Ross Potter’s rallying call for more goals as they hit Braintree Town for nine, while there were also convincing wins for AFC Sudbury, Mildenhall Town and Debenham LC.
Following the Tangerines’ 1-1 draw with Stowmarket Town last week in which his side had 17 shots on goal, Potter challenged his strikers to respond and they did just that in style in Essex, with a four-goal haul from Jamie George being added to by Kyle Downes (2), Joseph Manning, Sam Page and Danny Self in a 9-2 success in the Thurlow Nunn League First Division.
Elsewhere, in the Ryman League Premier Division, Needham Market slumped to a 4-2 defeat at Kingstonian, while in Division One North, Afc Sudbury cruised to a 4-0 victory over Redbridge but there were defeats for Soham Town Rangers, losing 2-1 at AFC Hornchurch and Bury Town, going down 2-1 at Maldon and Tiptree.
In the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division, Hadleigh United lost 3-0 at Fakenham Town, Walsham-le-Willows suffered a 2-0 defeat at Felixstowe and Walton United, Haverhill Rovers lost 1-0 to Norwich United, Thetford Town suffered a 5-0 thumping against Stanway Rovers, Long Melford drew 1-1 with Norwich United, Newmarket Town beat Gorleston 2-1 and Mildenhall sealed a 5-1 win at Whitton United.
In the First Division, there were draws for AFC Sudbury Reserves (0-0) against King’s Lynn Town Reserves and Cornard United (3-3) against Team Bury, Halstead Town won 1-0 against Needham Market Reserves and Haverhill Borough beat Leiston Reserves 2-1 away.
Meanwhile, Stowmarket Town secured their progression in the First Division Knockout Cup with a narrow 1-0 win away at Ely City.
In the Barclays Premier League, Norwich City came out on the wrong end of a nine-goal thriller as they slipped to a last gasp 5-4 defeat against Liverpool.
After Firmino opened scoring for the travelling Reds, The Canaries raced into a 3-1 lead following goals from Mbokani Bezua, new signing Steven Naismith and Wes Hoolahan. Liverpool hit back through Jordan Henderson, Firmino and James Milner, only for Sebastian Bassong to level again for Norwich in the 92nd minute.
However the drama was not finished as Adam Lallana broke Norwich’s hearts in the 95th minute with what proved a dramatic winner.
In the Skybet Championship, Ipswich Town also suffered defeat as they went down to a comprehensive 3-0 loss at Birmingham City following goals from Will Buckley, Jon Toral and Maikel Kieftenbel.
