FOOTBALL ROUND-UP: Diss leave it late to snatch point + Ipswich Town highlights
An 88th-minute header from Jason Armes rescued a 1-1 draw for Diss Town during their home clash with Haverhill Borough on Saturday afternoon, while there was also big wins for Long Melford and Framlingham Town.
Visiting Borough dominated much of the Thurlow Nunn League First Division contest at Brewers Green Lane, yet they only had one goal to show for it after Craig Pruden found the net via a deflection in the 72nd minute.
Even so, it appeared that Pruden’s strike was going to be enough until two minutes from time when the alert Armes powered in Sam Bryant’s corner from the left.
Elsewhere in the division, new boys Framlingham enjoyed a dream start to their campaign as they thrashed King’s Lynn Reserves 6-1, with Jake Taylor netting a hat-trick.
AFC Sudbury Reserves won away at their Dereham counterparts, but Needham Market Reserves and Team Bury tasted defeat, while Cornard United were held to a 0-0 home draw by Downham Town.
In the FA Cup, Halstead Town’s home tie with Newmarket Town was abandoned after visiting striker Matt Hayden suffered a serious injury, which he has since confirmed to be ligament damage.
The encounter will now be replayed tomorrow evening (Tuesday, 7.45pm).
Long Melford booked their place in the Preliminary Round of the competition as they thrashed hosting St Margaretsbury 5-2.
In contrast, Hadleigh United, Mildenhall Town, Ely City. Thetford Town and Haverhill Rovers all exited the tournament at the first hurdle.
Despite their 2-1 defeat, Rovers’ match against Hertford Town attracted a crowd of 257 people, which is a record for The New Croft ground.
Meanwhile, Walsham-le-Willows will have a second chance after they played out a 0-0 draw away at Kirkley & Pakefield.
On the opening weekend of the Football League Championship, Ipswich Town have a new hero in Grant Ward, who marked his debut by scoring a second-half hat-trick in the 4-2 win over Barnsley.
Norwich City also hit a quartet of goals as they won 4-1 away at Blackburn Rovers.
