Double success for Suffolk over 50s

Suffolk over-50s, captained by Sudbury’s Colin Walters, have pulled off a double success, finishing top of the Home Counties Championship League, and beating second-placed Essex in the play-off final at Harrow St Mary.

Suffolk, with Long Melford’s Bill Byford scoring 67,and sharing a fourth-wicket partnership of 165 with Phil Caley (St Albans, 101), posted 271-7 in their 45 overs.

Essex fell 54 runs short at the end of their innings, despite an unbeaten 114 for opener David Thrift. Byford took two catches as Essex were all out for 217.

The Suffolk squad included Sudbury’s Chris Cook, as 12th man, and he came on to field during the Essex innings.
