Derby delight for Cornard in Quinton Bowl

Cornard Bowls Club came out victorious in the local derby with Sudbury to progress into the next round of the Quinton Bowl.

Played at Sudbury, the national men’s fours knock-out competition was played over four rinks with the best of 21 ends at the weekend.

The hosts got off to a good start on rink one with Peter Hanscombe, Gordon Edgar, Brian Smith and Dave Parker taking their match 23-18 against M Wickenden, T Moore, R Nash and S Thompson.

On rink five Sudbury’s Terry Swift, Terry Parson, Colin Clarke and John Simmonds won 24-14 against D Twyman, J Green, I Noy and G Williams.

On rink two Sudbury’s quartet of Aaron Phillips, Graham Roberts, Graham Gilbert and Grant Duff crashed out against R Bareham, A Farrant, J Brooks and P Crisp 14-35.

On rink three it was a tighter game with Cornard’s A Trimlett, R Webb, G Gooderham and G Rowland coming out on top against Allen Monkman, Barry Eaves, Colin Tuxworth and Graham Smith 24-21.

Cornard took the match 91-82.

n Sudbury Bowls Club — located opposite the theatre in Quay Lane — are holding an open day on Saturday from 10am-2pm with bowls provided for newcomers to have a go.
