Cook provides the winning ingredient for Humbugs
THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE
Halstead Town 1
Needham Market Reserves 0
Halstead Town extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to six matches courtesy of a 1-0 win over Needham Market Reserves on Saturday.
The visitors went in to the contest rooted to the bottom of the Division One table, but on a heavy pitch, they were able to provide Halstead with a stern test.
The hosts forced a succession of early corners and thought that they had broken the deadlock from one of them, only for the referee to disallow the goal for an infringement.
However, they did go in front in the 15th minute when the away goalkeeper failed to hold Sam Cripps’ shot from distance and Tom Cook pounced to score.
Former Colchester United midfielder, Karl Duguid, went closest to scoring an equaliser for Needham before the break, but his free-kick from 25 yards out was tipped over by James Waters, in the Halstead goal.
The second-half lacked the intensity and excitement of the opening 45 minutes, yet the first exchanges favoured Needham as they went on the attack from the restart.
The hosts withstood this however, and the balance of the game again swung in their favour.
Cook went close when he lashed a great shot just wide after outpacing the Needham defence, while a few minutes later Nicholas Farthing saw a goalbound effort deflected over.
Clear opportunities were at a premium in the closing stages as Halstead held out to claim all three points, which sees them keep hold of sixth position.
