Coley departs as AFC’s squad continues to take shape

AFC Sudbury manager Jamie Godbold has said football will be the last thing on Ayrton Coley’s mind after the wide man was released from his contract.

The 23-year-old joined Sudbury from Ryman League Division One North rivals Waltham Abbey at the start of last summer, and scored seven goals in 41 appearances for the Yellows during the 2014-15 campaign.

“Ayrton requested to leave the club which we granted for him,” said Godbold. “He was in and out of the side last year.

“He had a year left on his contract but I think football is the last thing on Ayrton’s mind right now.

“He’s dealing with some personal issues at the moment and needs to get his head right first.”

Sudbury began their pre-season friendlies with a 2-1 defeat at Brantham Athletic on Tuesday night.

Stefano Mallardo gave AFC the lead just after the hour mark, before Brantham struck twice in the last 20 minutes to win the game.

“We fielded two separate teams so we could have a look at five or six young lads and a couple of trialists,” said Godbold, whose side visit Ipswich Wanderers for their next friendly on Tuesday (7.45pm).
