MARSHALL HATCHICK TWO COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION THREE Long Melford 144-9 lost to Brightlingsea 159 by 15 runs
Long Melford were knocked off the top of the table after a home defeat to mid-table outfit Brightlingsea in Division Three on Saturday.
Choosing to field, Melford’s James French and Gareth Boon were hoping to carry on the good work from last week.
French struggled to find his rhythm, but Boon soon found his and had his wicket - Stuart Barker caught behind by Chris Cleverley.
Melford were not having it all there own way with Brightlingsea knowing how to bat on a sub-standard wicket.
Boon (15-5-27-3) grabbed his second wicket when Toby Cracknell caught behind by Cleverley and added a third when he trapped Jamie Barry lbw.
Bill Byford had Robert MacDonald caught by Craig Boon and added a second wicket when Bradley Hardy was caught by James French.
Wicketkeeper Cleverley added three more catches to give Stuart Whitehart his first wicket and Byford two more.
Whitehart (7-1-31-2) clean-bowled George MacDonald in the final over before Cleverley brought the innings to a close by stumping Robert Dowman off Byford (14.4-1-58-5)
Melford’s reply did not get off to the best of starts as they were 2- 2 when Steve Martin and Byford fell for ducks.
Ashley Skeggs and Lee Phillips began to rebuild before Phillips (11) fell with the score on 35.
Joe Harvey (47) joined Skeggs (23), who chopped on to his stumps, leaving Melford at 57-4.
Only Whitehart (14) and Chris Wenborn (12no) reached double figures in support of Harvey as Melford fell 15 runs short.
