Chance for Sudbury to prove promotion credentials

RALLYING CALL: Sudbury RFC captain Justin Burton

Sudbury Rugby Club captain Justin Burton has urged his side to prove their promotion credentials with victory in Saturday’s crucial encounter at rivals Diss (2.30pm).

Graham Richards’ charges head to Mackenders in second-place, one position and three points ahead of their opponents, following a blistering run of six successive victories that was maintained with a 45-0 success over neighbours Ipswich last time out.

The visitors will be aiming to exact revenge over Diss, who came out on top of a hard-fought encounter in November, with a 20-17 win.

Victory would see Sudbury pull further ahead of Diss and maintain the pressure on current leaders Saffron Walden, who hold a seven point advantage.

“We are aware that it is a massive match,” said Burton.

“We know exactly what to expect having had a close game against them before and we know what we have to do this time round.

“At the time we were gutted to lose that match because we really should have won it, there is no reason why we can’t this time.

“There is still a lot of games to play but victory would see us widen the gap over Diss and would put a lot of pressure on them to catch us.

“We go into every game looking to win and we know finishing in the top two is in our own hands.

“Having that destiny in our own hands is massive and really all the pressure to win is on them.”
