Bury trio feature for Eastern Counties team

Bury St Edmunds players Gary Andrews, Joe Reid and Sam Bixby were in the Eastern Counties team which opened their Bill Beaumont Cup county championship division one campaign with a 29-11 defeat by Cheshire at Chester on Saturday.

Counties took an early lead with a penalty from Simon Horbeck (Shelford), but Cheshire hit back with a penalty and two converted tries before Horbeck made it 17-6 with his second penalty just before the interval.

Counties lost Aki Lea (Shelford) to a yellow card early in the second half, Cheshire taking advantage with two tries to take a 29-6 lead.

Counties piled on the pressure in the last quarter, but Cheshire kept them at bay until near the end when captain Red Newberry (Shelford) capped some fine driving play with a try.

Counties are next in action against Lancashire at Fylde on Saturday. Team manager Dave Masdin will name his squad in midweek.

Lancashire beat Yorkshire 40-27 on Saturday.
