Battling against some blustery winds Stoke-by-Nayland bronze team took to the fairways of the Gainsborough course. Their opponents were Colne Valley who fared a little better in the conditions to take the match 4-3.

Joan Landen, three down after six holes, managed to get back to all square by the ninth. The match was close until Landen lost on the 18th, two down.

Nora Hutchinson managed to win 3 and 2. Lesley Hitchcock, back to her winning ways, clinched a 4 and 3 victory on the 15th green. Ann Thomas, Barbara Jones and Roz Clements lost their matches, Thomas on the 16th, Jones on the 14th and Clements on the 15th.

Anne Hemmings came to the 18th having been four down early on, but as usual managed to fight back. Her tee shot landed short of the bunker, but her opponent was in trouble in the rough, taking another four shots to get near the pin. Hemmings sunk her putt to win 1up.

Stoke still head league four with two more matches to play, the next one at home to Clacton on Friday, June 5.

n Eleven pairs of Stoke-by-Nayland ladies took to the Constable course to take part in the Coronation Foursomes.

After a dry start the rain set in. Sue Spittlehouse and Ann Thomas finished first with 30 points.

Fran Chandler and Nora Hutchinson were second with 28 points, and Lesley Garnett and Maryann Griffiths third with 25 ocb.

n Stoke-by-Nayland will host a round of the Lee Westwood Golf Tour, on August 21, a competition which sees 500 young golfers competing at various venues UK-wide for a prize fund in excess of £10,000.

The tour, which starts in May, is played over four months and provides the opportunity for junior golfers to play in a national golf tournament at a local level, with the national final on September 29 where the winner will pick up a trip for four people to the USA.
