BREAKING NEWS: Haverhill and Worlington teams could go up after league confirms promotion position
Come Saturday evening, Haverhill, Worlington and two other clubs could be celebrating an unexpected promotion following an announcement by the chairman of the Two Counties Championship earlier today.
Norman Atkins emailed a Haverhill CC committee member to confirm that, should Division One champions Sudbury win their Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League promotion play-off match with Godmanchester on Saturday, those teams that finished third in divisions two to six will also be promoted.
Haverhill had asked for Mr Atkins to clarify the league’s stance on how many teams would be promoted should Sudbury be successful.
In his email, Mr Atkins said: “RULE 6 says ‘AUTOMATIC promotion and relegation shall be applied for the first two and last two in Divisions 1-6 etc’
“If a team is relegated from the EAPL and no team is promoted from the Two Counties then third team is relegated from each Division to accommodate the relegated team
“However, if a team is promoted from the Two Counties and no team is relegated from the EAPL then a third team is promoted from each division to fill the vacancy
“It follows therefore that if Sudbury win their play-off final on Saturday then the third placed team in each Division will be promoted.”
In the event of a Sudbury win, the ruling would see Haverhill promoted from Division Two, Ipswich & E Suffolk from Division Three, Haverhill II from Division Four, Elmstead Grasshoppers II from Division Five and Worlington II from Division Six.
