Bacton groundsman wins county award

Bacton United 87’s Bryan Symonds has scooped the Suffolk Groundsman of the Year award.

The 72-year-old pipped Bury St Edmunds-based Sporting 87’s Mark Flack and last year’s winner Darryle Flegg of Achilles, who finished second and third respectively.

“[It is] unbelievable, It is a credit to everybody who is a member of Bacton United 89 Football Club and especially the manager, Ryan Owens, because whenever I see him he always remarks on the state of the pitch,” he said.

As a result, Bacton will receive a £100 voucher, Sporting 87 a £75 voucher and Achilles a £50 voucher to spend at the accolade’s sponsor Mark Harrod Ltd.

Additionally, all three groundsmen will be presented with certificates at an end-of-season awards ceremony.

The other three grounds visited by the judges were Framlingham Town, Old Newton United and Sole Bay Junior FC.
