Promotion winner Beckett moves on from Sudbury Rugby Club

Sudbury Rugby Club return to the field on Saturday with a home pre-season friendly against Thurrock (2pm) – but they will be without key try scorer Austin Beckett in London League One North this term.

The England Youth-capped winger made the decision to return to help his hometown club back up the leagues towards the end of the 2014/15 campaign in Three North East.

But the player, who had a spell in Northampton Saints’ Academy, has revealed he will be rejoining the Loughborough Students side, having taken a year out following university.

Henry Cowling has left for higher-league Shelford but there is good news for head coach Ben Scully in Toby White’s return, with the influential member of the squad from a few seasons ago returning to full availability after completing university.

Saturday’s friendly comes a month since the squad returned to pre-season training in the hot weather and will be a chance for Scully to try out different combinations and assess his options for the return to the higher level.

The club is offering free entry to the fixture, which will be played over four quarters.

l Both Sudbury Rugby Club (Rugby Club of The Year) and player Ellie Rogers, 16, (Women’s Player of The Year) are in the final six for the Crabbie’s National Rugby Awards, with the winners to be announced at Twickenham on August 29.
