I HAVE read the article on short-stay parking charges in the Free Press (December 1) and feel the need to comment.
We too live in Halstead and regularly come to Sudbury to shop and enjoy the ambience of the town.
Sadly our own town is suffering with shop closures and an almost defunct market scene.
Our town council sadly thinks that charging for parking is the panacea to all problems.
Sudbury is a larger and more vibrant town with a larger population in its catchment area. F
ree parking without penalty makes for a relaxed feeling to the laid back atmosphere of the town at present, which encourages the likes of us to shop and spend more in the town.
A small rise in local taxation would be a better and fairer way to raise money for services that Babergh District Council provides. Please reconsider.
