Gritting policy must be reviewed

FOLLOWING on from the recent reports in your newspaper concerning traffic conditions in Sandy Lane, Sudbury, it should be of interest to those in charge of road safety that, despite carrying a significant number of heavy duty vehicles in a residential area on a daily basis, the Highways Department of Suffolk County Council does not deem it necessary to salt this road when icy conditions are forecast.

I can only presume that although the lane is totally unsuitable for the type and amount of traffic it carries, it is classed as a C road and therefore doesn’t qualify for any special treatment.

Perhaps in the light of the recent appalling road conditions, when one heavy goods vehicle hit the wall of a property in Sandy Lane, Suffolk County Council could revise its road salting policy before a serious accident occurs not just to property but more importantly to the people who live and work in the area.
