Charity’s call to students

The Girling and Upcher Charity, founded in 1724, is once again offering financial assistance to local students going on to further education at college or university.

The qualifying criteria are quite strict – applicants must have a home address in Sudbury (within the town boundaries and not surrounding parishes) or have attended St Gregory Primary School in Mill Lane, Sudbury, for at least two years and be under the age of 21 on September 30.

Last year, a total of £27,570 was made available to 39 students who had successfully applied for financial assistance towards their further education.

The Girling and Upcher Charity was also set up to support St Gregory Primary School and significant grants were made last year to the school to assist with the purchase of a range of resources for a new maths scheme and to assist with resources for the two special needs units at the school. Application forms for this year’s grants are now available from the clerk to the trustees at the offices in Steed and Steed LLP in Gainsborough Street, with a closing date of June 30.
