Weekend Thought by John Boardman

Are you good at refusing offers? Shops, market stallholders and adverts are always trying to tempt us with “irresistible” offers like “20 per cent off”, “up to 70 per cent off”, or “buy one get one free”.

But you know that what they really want is ... for you to either type in your credit card details or part with your cash.

At this time of year, the credit card companies send out their bills. Those excited moments of Christmas shopping using the credit card seem far away and the stark reality of paying the bill faces us, like a hangover after a party.

Giving in to those pre-Christmas shopping temptations now means “ouch, look at that total”.

So perhaps it would be good to tell you about something entirely free.

Is there anything worthwhile that doesn’t cost any money? Yes, the love of God.

We read in the Bible: “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his son, his one and only son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.” John 3:16 The Message.

The opportunity to have a lifelong, eternal, loving relationship with God is ours, through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

Jesus said: “I came so they (you and me) can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” John 10:10 The Message.

All you and I need to do is to have faith. A wonderful life with Jesus is ours and it’s free. There’s no small print. Even “The Bible” app is free to download.
