Village pub earns honour

A PUB and restaurant in one of the area’s most picturesque villages is celebrating an honour from the AA.

After just six months at the helm of The George in Cavendish, business partners Bonnie Steel and Lewis Bennet have been awarded an AA Rosette and four-star rating for a restaurant with rooms.

Both had previously worked together at the former Red Onion restaurant in Sudbury and the Bulmer Fox – Bonnie at front of house and Lewis in the kitchen – before joining forces to take on The George in October last year.

Bonnie said: “We are so pleased. It was an anonymous visit from the AA and they didn’t tell us until after they had done the inspection.

“We are thrilled and have had tremendous support from the village.

“It was a natural progression for us as business partners to want to run our own place and we are having a lot of fun doing it.

“The George is a beautiful building and it sells itself really. Lewis takes his food inspiration from the London restaurants and wherever we can we use fresh local produce and grow our own baby leaves for dressing the food and edible flowers.”

Bonnie said the pub was now looking forward to a busy summer.
