UPDATE: Elderly man, 93, who died after falling into Hadleigh river was from local area

An elderly man who died after falling into a river in Hadleigh on Saturday was from the local area.

Officers went into the River Brett and pulled the 93-year-old to safety on Saturday morning.

He was unconscious but still breathing at the time.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance attended but a land ambulance took the man to Ipswich Hospital, where he died later that morning.

Suffolk Police were initially called at around 7.15am to reports the man had fallen into the river.

Inspector Andy Pursehouse, of Suffolk Police, said the man’s death was not being treated as suspicious.

“From our point of view it appeared to be an accident but a coroner will investigate,” he said.

Police said the man was believed to be from the local area, adding he would not be named until the inquest.
