Travellers set up home on former airfield

A GROUP of travellers have set up temporary home on a former airfield.

Around 20 people living in seven caravans moved on to Chilton Airfield in Great Waldingfield on Tuesday.

Police have spoken to the travellers on the site, who claim they are making their way to the Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria.

Inspector Paul Crick, from Sudbury Police, said that during their stay extra patrols would be run in the area to give “reassurances” to both nearby residents and the travellers.

“Officers have been liaising with the travellers and Suffolk County Council, who own the land,” he said.

“The travellers have stated that it is their intention to leave within the week.”
