Town statue is cleaned

SUDBURY’S Thomas Gainsborough statue got a £1000 make-over this week as part of a town centre clean-up by the council.

Workers used a cherry picker to apply a “putty” on the Market Hill statue, which was then wrapped with cling film overnight. The next morning the cling film was peeled off, taking with it layers of grime and “green” which had soaked into the bronze.

Town clerk Sue Brotherwood said: “It’s 18 years since he was last cleaned up, so I think it was well worth it. We have also done the same thing to the cenotaph.”

She said that a protecting coat had been applied to the both the statue and cenotaph, which should help prolong the life of the clean up.
