Sudbury artist's sketches up for auction to raise money for NHS workers tackling coronavirus

A series of sketches featured in a published book, which were illustrated by a long-standing Sudbury resident, are being auctioned off to help raise funds for NHS medical workers.

Michael Head, who was known fondly as Mick the Hat to friends and family, lost his battle with lung cancer earlier this month.

Mr Head, who was a talented artist, sketched the caricatures which are illustrated in The Man With the Walking Stick, a book composed by Bob Darvell, which explores both the history and residents of Sudbury.

Bob Darvell plans to pay tribute to his friend, Michael, who died from cancer, by auctioning off his original sketches which were used to illustrate a book he published..The money will be donated to fund a break for a worthy staff member at West Suffolk Hospital....Pictured: Resident Michael Peas.....PICTURE: Mecha Morton .... “They were absolutely wonderful,” said Mr Darvell, of Orchard Place. “He drew them all from memory.”

Mr Darvell plans to auction off the sketches as a tribute to his friend, while the money raised will be donated to West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds.

Having known Mr Head since the age of 12 when growing up in Sudbury, Mr Darvell remembers fondly spotting him frequently wearing his trademark leather hat.

“It was a lifelong friendship,” he said. “Everyone knew Mick the Hat. Now he’s another character who has sadly gone.”
