Students from Thomas Gainsborough School in Great Cornard have had their say on the upcoming elections for the South Suffolk parliamentary seat.

Candidates from all five of the major parties were in attendance, grilled by students and teachers in a televised debate.

The debate was put online by ITV News Anglia and culminated in a mock election, with UKIP candidate Steven Whalley coming out on top, collecting 23 per cent of the vote.

Mr Whalley said: “All of the candidates enjoyed the day and we learnt a lot about the school.

“The level of debate from the audience gave us some very testing questions.”
