Staff at West Suffolk Hospital praised in CQC report for providing ‘outstanding’ care

West Suffolk Hospital has been given a top bill of health by watchdogs who awarded it an overall ‘good’ rating and praised its staff for providing ‘outstanding’ medical care.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) commended the Bury St Edmunds hospital’s staff for being ‘helpful, open, dynamic and overwhelmingly caring’.

It follows a three day inspection in March by CQC inspectors, who noted that feedback from patients, relatives and carers was ‘extremely positive’ throughout the hospital.

In a report published today, Professor Sir Mike Richards, chief inspector of hospitals, highlighted several areas of ‘outstanding practice’.

They include:

n The respect shown by porters when transporting the deceased to the mortuary - especially in respect of baby deaths.

n A receptionist in the emergency department who provided CPR to a collapsed patient.

n Two consultant pediatricians who learnt hypnosis to reduce the need to sedate children requiring an MRI or CT scan.

n Outstanding trust performance againts national audits with stroke performance a highlight.

n Staff who went the extra mile to drop off take-home medications or provide decaffeinated tea bags for a patient.

n The work of the hospital’s virtual fracture team which ensures fractures are diagnosed as quickly as possible in the emergency department.

The hospital was also rated good in urgent and emergency services, surgery, critical care, maternity and gynaecology, services for children and young people, end of life care as well as outpatients and diagnostic imaging.

However, the CQC also found ‘areas of poor practice’ where the hospital ‘needs to improve’.

It says the trust must review and ensure ‘robust processes’ are in place to comply with mixed sex accommodation regulations in certain areas of the hospital and ensure a ‘robust process’ for data management regarding medical photography.

The trust should also improve referral to treatment times to ensure surgical patients receive treatment within 18 weeks.

Prof Dr Steve Dunn, chief executive of the hospital, said: “We’re really pleased with the results of this rigorous inspection, which show that patients at West Suffolk are receiving outstanding care.

“We are especially delighted that the dedication and compassion of our fantastic staff was recognised and commended by the inspectors.

“They are the lifeblood of the hospital and this rating is a testament to their hard work and enthusiasm.

“Along with lots of key areas for celebration, the report also highlights some where we could do even better. Over the coming months, we will build on these strong foundations and drive through the CQC’s recommendations so that we can improve still further for the patients we serve.”
