A GROUP of runners have handed out £8,000 to worthy causes.
Halstead Road Runners split the money, which was raised at the Halstead and Essex Marathon in May, between nine charitable causes.
These included Halstead’s Travel Aid for Parents of Sick Children and East Anglian’s Children’s Hospice, as well as the sports department of the town’s Ramsey College and Halstead in Bloom.
Club chairman and race director Keith Thorogood said: “As the marathon is a local event supported by the local community, and the club is made up of local people, we like to put the money back into the community.
“The Halstead and Essex Marathon is the seventh best in the country, ahead of London and some of the larger ones, as voted by runners based on the experience of running it, the organisation and the course itself. It is a prestigious event for the area.”
Travel Aid for Parents of Sick Children received £750 from the club. Charity chairman Jackie Pell said: “It is much-needed money and we are very grateful to the Road Runners. We provide travel aid if people have children in hospital or if they have to take them there.
“It’s a very low key operation, we just try to relieve some of the stress of having children in hospital.”
This year’s Halstead and Essex Marathon will take place on Sunday, May 13. More than 800 runners are expected to take part.
