BUDDING archaeologists got an insight into real fieldwork during a school trip.
A group of 29 pupils from All Saints Middle School in Sudbury took part in a field walking exercise in Brundon.
Led by Carenza Lewis, from Channel 4’s Time Team, the group from Years 7 and 8 searched for artefacts and evidence of the location of a long-lost church.
Teacher Peter Rednall, who accompanied the children on the day, said: “Carenza showed the children how to do the field walking. It was staked out into a grid of 10-metre squares, which the children surveyed.
While the pupils worked in bright sunshine, the cold breeze helped show the dedication needed to be an archaeologist.
“Whatever the weather, they’re out there, and these people are determined,” said Mr Rednall.
Deputy headteacher Robert Wheeler explained that students had already undertaken a “time travel for beginners” session at Cambridge University in November.
Mr Rednall added: “They got a deeper understanding of the work of the archaeologists and it may make some of the children think about doing this when they’re older.”
