Parking fine is withdrawn

A blue badge holder who claimed he was unfairly given a parking fine for failing to show his display timer has had the charge rescinded.

Michael Walsh, who was with his wife Bridget, was left fuming after returning to his car in North Street car park in Sudbury to discover he had been given a penalty notice.

Mr Walsh had displayed a blue badge – issued due to his wife’s mobility problems following treatment for tuberculosis – on his car’s dashboard, along with a free three-hour ticket.

However, he forgot to put out a parking disc, which blue badge holders are required to display in order to show their time of arrival.

“It was a simple mistake and it was clear how long we had been there,” said Mr Walsh, from Hawkins Road.

The couple’s parking ticket showed they had arrived at 10.29am, but despite still having more than two hours left on their stay, a parking warden issued them with a ticket at 11.04am.

On Thursday Mr Walsh, 63, contacted the Free Press to say Babergh District Council, which manages the car park, had withdrawn the ticket and £55 fine.

“It is such a relief,” he said.
