Old Cannon Brewery is Bury St Edmunds’ only pub to be shortlisted for prestigious award
The owners of the Old Cannon Brewery have spoken of their pride at being shortlisted for a regional award.
The Old Cannon Brewery, in Cannon Street, Bury St Edmunds, has been shortlisted for the pub of the year category at this year’s Suffolk Food and Drink Awards.
It is the only pub in Bury St Edmunds to be shortlisted and a public vote will decide the winner.
Owners Hannah and Garry say they are extremely proud to be named among the finalists.
Garry said: “Thanks to everyone who nominated us. It was quite a shock when we found out, especially to be the only pub in Bury St Edmund’s to be shortlisted.
“The staff are great and really make this place a great pub.
“Voting closes on April 1 so help us show Suffolk Bury has the best pub.”
Emma, front of house, said: “It’s great to see we have been nominated, it’s always nice to know our hard work and customer service has been recognized.”
Adrian, the head chef, said: “I’m really pleased the food and pub has been shortlisted.
“Everything’s made in-house and locally sourced, it’s great to have the local community voting for us.”
The nominees for Pub of the Year were accepted for creating a “distinct and high quality offering for their customers”.
The nomination demands that “common to all finalists will be great standards of customer service and understanding of their market, technical expertise in sourcing and providing a good range and standard of drinks – both alcoholic and non-alcoholic – plus a sense of character that makes a visit to these pubs enjoyable and memorable.”
Garry said: “I believe the Old Cannon has been recognised because it combines a traditional real ale pub with an acclaimed restaurant where the staff and kitchen are knowledgeable about the products.
“The Old Cannon is fortunate enough to employ a brewer who knows the beer inside out.
“The stainless steel vessels in the bar give the Old Cannon character you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere and they have the added bonus of being fully functional so you can watch the beer being brewed close up.”
