Next chapter begins for Angel pub in Sudbury as new management takes over

A new era has begun at a prominent gastro pub in Sudbury, with the incoming management stating the business has great potential, as they took the reins this week.

The Angel Inn in Friars Street was taken over by Michael Piccolo and Amy Mann on Monday, after the departure of Lisa and Jason Schroeder, who are moving on to set up their own bespoke catering business.

It is the first business venture for Mr Piccolo, who has worked in the hospitality trade for five years and previously helped to run the restaurant at the Lifehouse Spa and Hotel in Clacton.

He praised the work of the outgoing owners and said he believes the pub is an ideal location to set up shop, despite the ongoing struggles faced by local pubs in modern times.

“We found this little gem of a place in Sudbury and it looked like a fantastic opportunity,” he told the Free Press. “It’s a very central pub with a lot of space and it has a lot of potential.

“I’m a bit younger than a lot of people in this industry who have lots of experience, but it has been a great journey for me so far, and it has reached a point where I would like my own way of doing things.

“Sudbury as a place, from my experience visiting family and friends, is a lovely place to be.

“It has a got a big pub culture, and we want to be a part of that. It’s that standard that we want to live up to.”

Mr Piccolo confirmed the existing staff from the previous ownership would be retained, with the goal of increasing the number of employees as the business grows.

He explained he hopes to bring more customers in by staging community-driven events, such as quiz nights and live performances by local musicians, and he encouraged people to get in touch and share their ideas.

“It’s going to be an evolving business, I’m sure,” he added. “We want to give to the community what they would like to see.

“The traction at the pub has gone down a bit in recent times, so we want to build it up and help it realise its full potential.

“We’re hoping to have it be a place where people will want to go – whether it’s on a Wednesday afternoon, or a Friday night.”
