Shop owner Jan Rockett wanted to run a tea shop, but her book-loving husband Ian convinced her to invest in Landers in Long Melford.
That was nearly a year ago, and the couple, who moved to Suffolk from Stoke-on-Trent, have been busy holding children’s book-reading sessions to encourage business.
It is one of a series of new ideas the pair have introduced since buying the Hall Street shop in February after Jan was left some money and decided to invest it in the business.
“It was difficult making inquiries about a business 180 miles away but, after a couple of visits, we decided we really liked the village,” said Jan. “Ian has a lifelong passion for books.”
Ian has connections with Suffolk, as his parents lived in Orford and he went to school in Holbrook.
The latest author to read out her work at the shop was Victoria Brock, who works in Hadleigh and who has written two children’s books about hedgehogs, inspired by her twin nieces.
Jan added: “We are holding children’s story readings as well as having book signings in February.
“The bookshop has been here for more than 30 years and has a good reputation in the community.
“We have brought new things to the shop to try to keep it going in an ever difficult time.”
