New benches to signal end of centre revamp

As work on Sudbury’s Borehamgate Precinct nears its end, shoppers have been promised that new benches will soon be in place.

Finishing touches to the £168,000 makeover are still being carried out, but visitors have voiced concerns about the lack of any seating areas.

The previous benches were removed when work to replace the notoriously slippery tiles with non-slip stone slabs started in October.

New metallic-style benches were due to be put in a number of weeks ago but, due to a manufacturing fault, they had to be sent back.

“When the new benches arrived, there was a fault which meant they could not be put together properly,” said Dick Knight, project supervisor of the refurbishment, which is being undertaken by Wiles contractors.

“The company supplying the benches has accepted there was a problem and we are expecting the new benches to arrival shortly.”

It was originally planned that the revamp would be completed by mid-February, but was subsequently put back to March earlier in the year.

Mr Knight said work was going well and should be finished in a few weeks.
