MURDER INVESTIGATION: ‘Hard to believe it has happened on our doorstep’ says Weybread Parish Council chairman
The Weybread Parish council chairman, Graham Gibbs, described the atmosphere in the village as “surreal and unbelievable”, as police continue their search for clues of what happened to the Stuarts.
Cllr Gibbs stated he and many villagers he had talked to had not known either Peter or Sylvia Stuart particularly well, but these incidents were still a “shock” to everyone.
“You know it’s real, but it’s hard to believe it has happened on your doorstep. Things like this don’t happen in rural Suffolk,” he told the Diss Express.
Cllr Gibbs, who also manages The Paddocks residential home, said the Stuarts were more regularly involved in the community activities in Withersdale, as their home is closer to Withersdale Village Hall, so most Weybread residents rarely got to see them.
However, he recalled meeting Sylvia at the launch of a new text on local history back in 2008, where she was “very enthusiastic” about what was in the book.
Cllr Gibbs praised Suffolk Police for their “brilliant” response over the past few days, but added there was not much the people of Weybread could do to help their enquiries.

He said: “There is still a community officer at the village hall. They keep saying they have had no responses from villagers. I want to tell them it’s not apathy. We do all care, but nobody really knew them.”
