After just weeks in the role, Chancellor Sunak was tasked with delivering his first Budget speech to the House of Commons earlier this month.

Highlighting the significance of the speech, Mr Cartlidge said: “The Budget was an extraordinary event to be at the heart of.

“Of course, since then, the economic position has crystallised around coronavirus and now all focus at the treasury is on that, with a very serious position facing the country, both economically, and above all, in terms of public health.”

Mr Cartlidge added: “We all have a duty as parliamentarians to do our bit in helping communicate the Government’s message about sensible steps to take, while listening to the many profound concerns held by individuals and businesses, who bear the brunt on the frontline.”

Mr Cartlidge, who has served as a Conservative MP for the South Suffolk constituency since replacing previous incumbent Tim Yeo in 2015, has been chosen as a PPS on two other occasions.

In 2018, he was appointed as PPS to the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, and remained in the role when Mr Hunt was promoted as Foreign Secretary.

The following year, he was appointed as PPS to the Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace.
