Michael Morpurgo to read at Bury cathedral concert
War Horse author Michael Morpurgo will be reading from his short story The Best Christmas Present in the World at a one-off concert in St Edmundsbury Cathedral on November 18.
Presented by Waterstones, Michael will be accompanied on stage by the actress Virginia McKenna and the six-piece acapella group Voices at the Door, who will sing carols from Britain, France and Flanders.
Directed by Simon Reade, The Best Christmas Present in the World is a short story of young soldier Jim and his personal account of the Christmas Truce 1914 during which a football match in no-man’s land is said to have taken place between enemies.
A century on, his letter is found in a antique desk marked ‘Jim’s last letter: to be buried with me when the time comes’ and the search begins for his ‘Dearest Connie’.
The concert has been performed in Belgium, Bristol and the National Theatre.
Tickets are £15 for adults, £8 for children or £40 for a family of two adults and two children.
The tickets are available from the Waterstones stores in the arc and Mutter Market, Bury St Edmunds.
