A MAN in his 80s was dramatically rescued from a stretch of the River Stour in Sudbury after jumping into the icy water to save a woman.
Emergency crews were called to the incident, close to the town’s rowing club in Quay Lane, shortly after 3pm on Friday afternoon after receiving reports that two people were in the river.
It is thought that the woman may have been feeding the ducks on the river bank when she slipped into the water, prompting her husband to jump in after her.
It later emerged that he had been struggling in the freezing water for 20 minutes when emergency crews arrived, while the woman had been able to get out 10 minutes earlier.
The pair were taken to West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds for further treatment.
