Long service awards for dedicated West Suffolk Hospital volunteers
Volunteers who have dedicated a record-breaking 42,000 hours to improving care at West Suffolk Hospital have been recognised with long service awards.
Twenty nine volunteers were presented with the accolades during a special party last Wednesday - with the hospital’s executive team serving them tea and cakes as a thank you.
Student Emilia Jewell, 18, of Ingham, received the Dr Damian Kershaw award after spending more than 100 hours volunteering on two wards.
The accolade is named after a former volunteer who went onto a successful career in medicine but died aged 28.
It is sponsored by Dr Kershaw’s mother Jackie and the Friends of West Suffolk Hospital.
Mrs Kershaw said: “Emilia has performed her duties to a commendably high standard with great dedication. She has deservedly been offered a medical school place and is a very worthy winner.”
The 29 volunteers have collectively clocked up 350 years of service and fulfil a variety of roles at the hospital. They help on wards at mealtimes, spend time with patients who have dementia and welcome patients and visitors.
The volunteers also support the chaplaincy team and raise funds through the Friends’ shop and stall.
Young people, who are planning a career in healthcare and took part in the trust’s student volunteer programme for six months, also received a badge. The tea party was held during national volunteers’ week. To volunteer call 01284 713169.
