Long Melford Swan re-opens after acquisition by Atalian Servest
The new owner of a Long Melford pub and restaurant, which relaunched this month, has described the venture as the “natural progression” for its business.
The future of The Swan in Hall Street had appeared unclear earlier this year, after signs went up in the windows stating it would be closed indefinitely due to “unforeseen circumstances”, as a result of its owners, family-run business Stuart Inns, going into liquidation.
But following its acquisition by Bury St Edmunds-based global services company Atalian Servest, the pub, which adjoins the Duck Deli, has been given a new lease of life, and it reopened its doors to customers on May 8.
The firm stated that a number of interior refurbishments have been taking place at The Swan, with the bar and restaurant now fully up and running.
Meanwhile, renovation work remains ongoing on the deli and the guest rooms, which are expected to be available for use by the end of next month.
Chris Poole, manager at Atalian Servest, told the Free Press that the company had not previously had any experience in the pub industry, until it took over and renovated The Cock Horse in Lavenham last year, which he says has enjoyed strong trade since that time.
“The Swan was a natural progression from there,” he explained. “It was a perfect opportunity for us.
“We have been having fantastic sales at The Cock Horse, which is why we really wanted to take on a second pub.
“There is a lot of history here and it fits in with our business model, plus it’s easy for us to be able to manage it, being close to The Cock Horse.
“We have had a fantastic response from the Long Melford community.
“We have changed a few bits in the bar to make it more presentable and changed the menu to cater to all demographics. We want to serve the local community.”
Mr Poole added that the firm’s ambitions for The Swan in the coming years include developing a buffet business from the deli, which it hopes can be used for community events, including business functions, weddings, funeral wakes and other occasions.
