Reports suggest supermarket giant Lidl has taken the first step towards opening a store in Halstead.

The chain, famous for its low prices, is believed to have bought the former EMD factory in Kings Road.

Planning permission was given by Braintree District Council two years ago to land owner Scott Properties for the site to be turned into a supermarket.

A spokesman from Lidl refused to comment.
