Great House in Lavenham celebrates top billing in prestigious hospitality guide
A boutique hotel in Lavenham has been crowned the East of England winner in a prestigious hospitality guide.
The Great House has been ranked among the top 100 get away experiences in The Sunday Times Best Places to Stay.
The annual publication provides a definitive guide on hotels in the UK, ranging from best value for money to luxury overnight stays.
Dominique Tropeano, who owns Colchester Zoo, took over the hotel and restaurant earlier this year, having been a loyal customer for more than two decades.
He attributed the business’ success to the strength of his team.
“We are very pleased – it’s an award for the staff,” he said.
The hotel’s fine dining with authentic French cuisine is what sets it apart from other hotels and eateries in the village, explained Mr Tropeano.
“We are in an unusual place in the sense that it’s a very English village, and we are French, and offer something that no-one else does,” he said.
When the business came on the market, Mr Tropeano was keen to secure its future.
“I wanted to preserve what The Great House represented in Lavenham,” he said, adding that while running a zoo was different to the work involved in owning a hotel and restaurant, the same principles applied.
“It’s very competitive,” he said. “You have to really know your business.
The majority of Mr Tropeano’s staff, who are originally from France, have become fond of the village and its charm.
“They are very dedicated and very professional,” he added.
