John Allen former managing director of Anglia Newspapers, has died at the age of 75, having been diagnosed with leukaemia in 2011.
A newspaperman for 42 years, John started his career in the advertisement department of the Lynn News and Advertiser in Kings Lynn in 1958 as an advertisement representative and was then appointed deputy advertisement manager.
In 1972 he moved to Bury St Edmunds as advertisement manager of the Bury Free Press, Suffolk Free Press and Newmarket Journal, later becoming advertisement director of these plus the Haverhill Echo and Diss Express.
He became publishing director for West Suffolk and was then made managing director of Anglia Newspapers.
He was also responsible for the St Neots and Huntingdon Town Crier for a while.
He and his wife Diana have two children, Sarah and Jonathan, and three grandchildren Liam, Sam and Freya.
John was a keen footballer and cricketer in Norfolk playing both for the Old Lennensians. In Suffolk he joined his home village cricket club Horringer and played for thirty years, serving as vice captain and as club chairman. He was a long-time supporter of Ipswich Town FC.
A keen gardener he joined Horringer and Ickworth Horticultural Society’s committee. John retired in 2000 when he had time to pursue his love of horse racing and the theatre with Diana.
